The Best Resume Fonts in 2026: Typography That Gets You Hired

Öne Çıkan Görsel

The font you choose for your resume matters more than most job seekers realize. Typography affects readability, conveys professionalism, and can even impact whether an applicant tracking system correctly parses your information. The wrong font can make your resume look dated, unprofessional, or hard to read — any of which can cost you an interview.

Why Font Choice Matters

Hiring managers and recruiters spend an average of six to seven seconds on an initial resume scan. During that brief window, the overall visual impression of your document plays a significant role. A clean, professional font signals competence and attention to detail. An unusual or decorative font creates friction and distracts from your content.

Beyond human readers, ATS systems need to extract text from your resume accurately. Some decorative or uncommon fonts can cause parsing errors, resulting in garbled text that makes your resume unsearchable. Sticking with widely supported, professional fonts eliminates this risk entirely.

Top Fonts for Resumes in 2026

Calibri

Calibri has been the default font in Microsoft Office since 2007, making it one of the most universally recognized and readable sans-serif fonts. It has a modern, clean appearance with soft, rounded edges that feel approachable without being informal. At 10 to 12 points, it is highly legible both on screen and in print.

Best for: General use across all industries. A safe, professional choice that works well in nearly every context.

Garamond

Garamond is a classic serif font with an elegant, timeless quality. It is slightly more compact than Times New Roman, which means you can fit more content per page without sacrificing readability. The serif style conveys tradition and sophistication, making it popular in legal, academic, and financial settings.

Best for: Traditional industries, executive-level resumes, academic CVs, and roles where a classic aesthetic is valued.

Helvetica

Helvetica is one of the most famous typefaces in the world, known for its clean lines, neutral character, and exceptional readability. It is a premium sans-serif font that conveys modernity and professionalism without drawing attention to itself.

Best for: Design, tech, marketing, and any role where visual sophistication matters. Also works beautifully on Mac-created resumes where the font is natively available.

Inter

Inter is a relatively newer font designed specifically for computer screens. It has excellent readability at small sizes, a wide range of weights, and a modern, approachable feel. It has quickly become a favorite in the tech industry and among design-conscious professionals.

Best for: Tech, startups, design, and any resume that will primarily be read on screen rather than printed.

Lato

Lato is a sans-serif font with a warm, friendly character that balances professionalism with approachability. It has a wide range of weights from thin to black, giving you flexibility in creating visual hierarchy. The slightly rounded letterforms make it feel more human than purely geometric fonts.

Fonts to Avoid

Times New Roman. While technically professional, it is so overused and so strongly associated with default word processor settings that it can make your resume look like you put zero effort into formatting. It is the typographic equivalent of a default template.

Comic Sans. This should go without saying, but Comic Sans has no place on a professional document. It undermines credibility immediately.

Script or decorative fonts. Fonts that mimic handwriting or use decorative flourishes are difficult to read and rarely parse correctly through ATS systems.

Extremely thin or light fonts. Fonts with very thin strokes can be hard to read when printed or viewed on low-resolution screens. Ensure your chosen font weight maintains readability at the sizes you plan to use.

Papyrus, Impact, or Brush Script. These fonts carry strong stylistic associations that distract from your content and signal poor design judgment.

Font Size Guidelines

Your resume should use a consistent type scale with clear hierarchy:

Name: 18 to 24 points. Your name should be the largest text on the page, establishing immediate identification.

Section headers: 12 to 14 points, bold. Headers like "Experience," "Education," and "Skills" should be clearly distinguishable from body text.

Body text: 10 to 12 points. This is the size for your job descriptions, bullet points, and all primary content. Anything smaller than 10 points becomes difficult to read and suggests you are trying to cram too much onto a single page.

Secondary text: 9 to 10 points. Dates, locations, and other supplementary information can be slightly smaller to create visual hierarchy.

Formatting Best Practices

Stick to one font family. Using multiple fonts creates visual chaos. Choose one typeface and use different weights (regular, bold, semibold) and sizes to create hierarchy within that single family.

Use bold strategically. Bold your name, section headers, job titles, and company names. Everything else should be regular weight. Over-bolding reduces its effectiveness and makes the page feel heavy.

Ensure adequate line spacing. Set line spacing to 1.15 or 1.2 for body text. Single spacing (1.0) feels cramped, while anything above 1.3 wastes space and can make your resume look sparse.

Maintain consistent margins. Standard margins of 0.5 to 1 inch on all sides provide adequate white space. Going below 0.5 inches makes the page feel crowded and may cause content to be cut off when printed.

The Bottom Line

Your resume font should be invisible in the best sense — it should present your content clearly and professionally without drawing attention to itself. Choose a clean, widely supported typeface, use a logical size hierarchy, and prioritize readability above all else. The best fonts make your qualifications easy to read. The worst ones make recruiters reach for the next resume in the pile.
